چکیده

Oil palm plantations are still believed to be the principal reason of primary forests' damages in Southeast Asia. To verify this accusation, a survey four private oil was carried out West Kalimantan Province Indonesia, identify history land status, cover types and use prior conversion these plantations. The research conducted using overlay maps Business Permit with Consensus-based Forest Land Use Planning/Provincial Spatial Plan permits, interpretation Landsat images 3 years 2 after establishment Interviews various formal informal community leaders were also conducted. Results indicated that original all areas (100%) not forest when established. Most (59.50%), formerly lands, while 40.50% concession belonging other companies. These results corresponded imagery interpretations, which showed 1 year before mostly shrubs (59.62%), remaining secondary swamp (18.35%), bare (16.46%) (5.58%). This confirmed plantations, responsible for deforestation.

Land Use Changes and GHG Emissions from Tropical Forest Conversion by Oil Palm Plantations in Riau Province, Indonesia

Increasing prices and demand for biofuel and cooking oil from importer countries have caused a remarkable expansion of oil palm plantations in Indonesia. In this paper, we attempt to monitor the expansion of oil palm plantations on peat land and in tropical forests. We measure the GHG emissions from the land conversion activities at provincial scale. Using Landsat images from three different pe...

Sustainable Oil Palm Development on Degraded Land in Kalimantan

Oil palm is expected to make a significant contribution to the predicted two-fold increase in demand for vegetable oils over the next forty years. Given the current expansion of the oil palm, there is much debate on the sustainability of oil palm due to deforestation and habitat destruction that is occurring in Indonesia, raising serious concerns regarding the sustainability of this cultivation...

Committed carbon emissions, deforestation, and community land conversion from oil palm plantation expansion in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Industrial agricultural plantations are a rapidly increasing yet largely unmeasured source of tropical land cover change. Here, we evaluate impacts of oil palm plantation development on land cover, carbon flux, and agrarian community lands in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. With a spatially explicit land change/carbon bookkeeping model, parameterized using high-resolution satellite time ser...

Modeling Land-use and Land-cover Change

Models are used in a variety of fields, including land change science, to better understand the dynamics of systems, to develop hypotheses that can be tested empirically, and to make predictions and/or evaluate scenarios for use in assessment activities. Modeling is an important component of each of the three foci outlined in the science plan of the Land-use and -cover change (LUCC) project (Tu...
